Jeff and the Cow Pie
I held a cold can of Pepsi to my face for relief from the hot summer day. The summer of `75 was particularly hot. I spent the summer bagging groceries and carting them to customers' cars at Boyd's Supermarket. Walking from the oven-like heat, back into the frigid air-conditioning of the store, my body felt the shock of the extreme temperature change for the millionth time that day. I noticed a large motorbike with sidebags in the parking lot. I do not remember the model, but I do remember it seemed out of place in Sheridan. It appeared to be similar to a Harley. Most motorbikes in Sheridan were dirt bikes or trail bikes.
I filled up two bags of groceries for a pleasant looking fellow that appeared to be about 19 years old. He had a mild manner about him, and I had not noticed him in the store before. I carried two bags out for him, and we walked over to the motorbike.
"This is your bike?" I queried. I found out he was from Detroit, Michigan and was touring the country looking for a small town to settle in. I helped him put his groceries in his saddlebags, wished him luck, and returned into the store.
That Sunday at our church, I bumped into this same fellow. He had decided that Sheridan was the place he wanted to be, so I welcomed him.
I found out his name was Jeff Hislop, a native of Detroit Michigan. Jeff had never been outside of the city, and was quite excited about learning how to live in a small town. Jeff proved to be a hard working, honest, easy to get along with person. He also provided some comical relief in trying to fit into Sheridan. I really liked Jeff, and we became friends, so even though I found his points of view pretty humorous sometimes, it was never in ridicule of him.
One of the first things Jeff wanted to do was to see a cow. "A cow? Why?" I asked. "I have never seen one except in pictures." Jeff informed me. Unbelievable, a person that had never seen a cow. Jeff assured me that there were plenty of people in Detroit that had never seen a real live cow.
At this point in my life I had never visited a big city except for one brief trip to Denver, so I had a hard time conceiving the idea of never having seen a cow. It would be many years later before I myself made the trek to the big city.
"Okay, I will show you a cow!" I agreed to meet Jeff the next day at his new apartment. When I arrived the motorbike was gone, and a full fledged Sheridanite vehicle was setting in his driveway, a 4 wheel drive with a gun rack in the window. Jeff had already sold his bike and was ready to plunge into the life of a small town.
We took Jeff's four wheel drive about 10 minutes out of town, and LO and BEHOLD, there they were. Standing around, chewing, mooing, looking stupid. Cows. Jeff was more excited than a toddler in a petting zoo. I guess it wasn't going to be very hard to entertain this fellow.
Next, Jeff wanted to learn how to survive in the mountains. "Yeah right!" was my comment. He assured me he really wanted to do this. I explained that living in the city may be tough and dangerous, but coming across a bear or mother moose in the mountains would really liven up his day. He insisted upon learning, and was going to head up to the mountains by himself.
I had a vision of Jeff wandering for days lost in the mountains looking for a McDonalds, so I told him I was coming with him.
We bought a knife, some portable fishing gear, and a backpack for Jeff to use. Early the next morning before the Sun came up we headed up into the mountains driving my Dad's Toyota Landcruiser 4-wheel drive. Mornings smell great in the mountains, the cold crisp air and the smell of pines lets you know you are really alive.
The straight roads started to twist slightly until the curves became sharp turns. As we climbed higher up the side of the mountain, you could view Sheridan off in the distance like a toy town. We stopped halfway up at Sand Point.
Sand Point is said to be the best spot in America to hang glide from. People drive from all over the U.S. to fly off of this point. The roads are paved up to here, and their is a nice parking area. The mountain drops straight down about 3000 feet, making the roads in the flat lands below look like a hair ribbon thrown onto the ground. When a hang glider launches from this point, they can fly almost 20 miles before landing.
We headed off the paved roads onto gravel roads that became dirt roads and trailed off into ruts. I engaged the drive from 2 wheel to 4 wheel and kept on going. When you are driving in the mountains, you have to be careful not to make ruts in an area that has water moving through it or it will become a canyon. The best thing to do is not to make ruts at all by staying on hard ground.
We came to a stream that was about 2 foot deep and 30 feet wide. I stopped the vehicle to shift to the lower set of gears. Jeff asked how we were going to get across. I smiled, and started forward toward the crick. Jeff gasped and
grabbed onto the dash, as the Landcruiser made its way sure-footedly through the water and rocks.
I drove the vehicle until trees started getting too thick to let us through and stopped. "End of the road!" I said. Jeff was relieved we were finished with our trip. "Oh no, not finished yet. Now we walk." I instructed.
Next, I made Jeff promise to keep secret the way to this lake we were headed to. I called it Lost Lake, although I really do not know it's official name.
Each time I had been there, I had seen no other signs of any other human. It was really nice. I told Jeff that at about 2 O'clock, the usually serene glass-like lake starts to boil with Brookie trout feeding on the surface bugs. During this time, you can catch as many fish as times you can get your line in the water. The rest of the day, they will not touch your bait.
We hiked down through the forest and started walking around a large clearing. Appearing to be solid ground, this was a swampy area with quick sand hiding underneath dry leaves and twigs. Jeff was ready to take the short cut through the swamp until I threw a large rock into it. The rock disappeared. Jeff decided my way was better.
I noticed fresh bear tracks on the ground and started keeping an eye out for easy to climb trees as we walked. I pointed out the tracks to Jeff and told him that more than likely the bear was more afraid of us then us of him, but since there were still some cubs around, a mother bear would attack without provocation. Be prepared to climb a tree.
"I read about this! If a bear starts to chase you, lay down and play dead!" Jeff excitedly revealed to me. "How nice! You test that theory. It will give me more time to get up a tree." I snidely replied.
We walked through the forest around the swamp and started to climb a 500 foot rock peak. Arriving at the top, an opening that looked like an old volcano revealed itself. As we started walking down the sloppy open grass fields, the lake came into view. It was beautiful. The green pines on the opposite side of the shiny water made a perfect picture. Jeff stopped stone still, gazing at the view.
Jeff learned how to fish that day. He caught several and the look on his face was worth a million words. I started to realize how special of a place I lived in. When you spend your whole life with something, you do not always realize how fortunate you are to have it.
Here was a person from the City, which to me would be the most exciting place to learn about, coming to my part of the world in awe of its beauty and nature. That day I learned through Jeff's childlike excitement of his mountain experience, to look at the nature with new eyes. I stopped to smell the air, to really look at the life around me. It really was a special place.
Jeff still had a good laugh for me yet that day. On the hike back, Jeff was silent about half way. He had become a little gun-shy of asking questions since everything he asked seemed to prove to be free entertainment. But I guess after a while his curiosity got the better of him.
"Say, what are these gray rocks I see laying everywhere?" There was caution in his words. Tim: "Gray rocks?" This is grassland, there are no rocks!" Jeff: "Sure there are! They are all over!" Tim: "Where?" "There!" Jeff pointed. I will explain what he was asking about. This part of the mountain had open land so ranchers would let their cattle graze on the grass. Cattle, of course, leave manure that after drying, looks like a gray Frisbee. We called these cow pies. Now a cow pie to me was ordinary. If you were from Sheridan, you would believe that everyone in the world would know what a cow pie was. But of course, not everyone in the world lives in Sheridan.
When Jeff pointed, I told him that rock was a cow pie and started to laugh! Poor Jeff. Such a brave soul to leave the city to put up with us hicks laughing at him.
We walked in silence again. Curiosity reached a boiling point one more time, and Jeff said "Tim, what is a cow pie?" I rolled on the ground for this one. Poor Jeff.
Jeff moved back to Detroit many years later in the suburb of Deerbourne. If you bump into him, tell him I said Hi.
