Depression: Are Antidepressants The Best Choice? (Part One)
Statistical evidence shows that depression affects more than 2.9
million people in the United Kingdom (UK). Figures also show
that seven out of ten suicides are by people affected by
depression, i.e., a total of 7,000 lives lost every year in the
UK and Ireland.
According to specialists, while the focus is on the best ways to
treat this illness, the concern is that at present as many as
three in four cases of depression are neither recognized nor
treated.
Antidepressants are medicines used to help people to release
their lives from depression. Most people can achieve significant
recovery from depression through these medications. But it is
not enough, because a complete treatment encompasses other
things too, such as psicotherapy.
Although antidepressant drugs are neither a panacea nor happy
pills, they are an important part of the problem solution, for
instance, in severe cases. They are drugs that can be prescribed
only by doctors. They have risks as well as benefits, and that
is the reason why they should be taken under a physician's
supervision. Taking medications for depression shall no be
understood as a sign of personal weakness
There are various factors in antidepressant administer, such as
the level of the person's
depression, age, history of illness
and personal preferences. Most people do best with a combination
of medications for depression and therapy.
There is strong evidence that antidepressants are more effective
than any other treatment in adults with severe depression. But
wether depression is mild or moderate, psychotherapy alone may
be the best treatment.
