Depression: Are Antidepressants The Best Choice? (Part Two)
Antidepressants are the best stimulus in the process to empower
depressed people to have positive thinking and raise themselves
esteem, because at the beginning it is quite difficult to think
about and do this. Taking anti-depressants helps a lot of people
to shift their moods and then these medications give them the
possibility to work on other therapies. Antidepressants work by
slowing the removal of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and
norepinephrine, from the brain. These neurotransmitters are
needed for normal brain function and are involved in the control
of mood among other things as eating, sleep, pain, and thinking.
Antidepressants make these natural chemicals more available to
the brain. These medications aid to relieve the symptoms of
depression by restoring the brain's chemical balance.
Though antidepressant drugs are also used to treat other
diseases, such as eating disorders, obsessive compulsive
disorder , chronic pain and premenstrual syndrome, among others,
these drugs are quite usefull to reduce hopelessness, extreme
sadness and lack of interest in life which are typical signs of
depression
Antidepressants are taken for a 4-to-6-month period, however,
some patients and their doctors may decide that antidepressants
are needed for a longer time.
There are many different types of antidepressants, such as the
following: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and
Tricyclic antidepressants
(tricyclics),among others.
Antidepressant drugs can cause side effects as most of
medicines. Some side effects may be inability to become aroused
and difficulty achieving orgasm, but not all people get these
side effects. The doctor may adjust your medication regimen in
order to be able to continue taking the antidepressant needed
without any side effect. Article written by Hector Milla, editor
