Come up to Door County Wisconsin for a Special Midwestern Vacation!
Door County, Wisconsin is a jewel of a destination in the Midwest! If you are not familiar with Door Count, you should be! If you look at a map of Wisconsin, it looks like the back of your left hand - with you thumb being the peninsula that sticks out into Lake Michigan. That's where Door County is! 250 miles of coastline, more lighthouses than any other county in the country, and charming villages that were fishing and logging villages in their heyday.
Villages like Sturgeon Bay, which is the largest town in Door County, Egg Harbor, Ellison Bay, Fish Creek, Sister Bay, and Baileys Harbor - each with their own rich history, charm and unique offerings. And Door County has some of Wisconsin’s best State Parks - like Peninsula State Park which juts out into the waters of Green Bay on the Bay side of the peninsula. Hiking and biking trails, gorgeous vistas, camping and more are all waiting for you in this park! Wonderful beaches soak up the waves at Whitefish Dunes State.
Stay at a romantic B&B, or a luxurious resort. Dine in the utmost casual style with a great hamburger from the Bayside Tavern in Fish Creek, or Birmingham's in Sturgeon Bay. Or, stay casual and enjoy fine dining at its best at the Whistling Swan Restaurant in Fish Creek, or T. Ashwell’s in Ellison Bay. Want to try a local tradition? There’s a lot of Nordic tradition in these parts. Try an original fish boil – the preparation of the meal is a sight to see – a huge pot outside sits atop a wood burning fire – and the fish chunks and potatoes are piled high inside the boiling pot of bubbling water. And when it spills over, the master boiler knows it’s almost time for dinner. The dinner is usually accompanied with cherry pie, made with local Door County cherries. Great fish boils can be found at the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek and at the Sandpiper Restaurant in Baileys Harbor!
Some of the Midwest’s best B&Bs are in Door County. We have found quite a few that we adore. From Victorian
turn-of-the-century homes, to more modern B&Bs, you will be thrilled with the wide range of choices. Some of our favorites in Sturgeon Bay are the White Lace Inn, Inn the Pines, Black Walnut Guest House, Colonial Gardens, Inn at Cedar Crossing and others! In Fish Creek, the Whistling Swan, Juniper Inn, Thorp House Inn are fabulous! Baileys Harbor houses one of our favorites – go visit The Blacksmith Inn on the Shore.
Wonderful resorts like the Bay Shore Inn, Bay Breeze Resort, Westwood Shores, Bridgeport, Little Sister Inn, Leathem Smith Lodge all offer wonderful accommodations.
And you can do a lot in Door County from paddle boating and parasailing in Ephraim, to riding Harleys in Brussels. Take a quaint carriage ride; find some wonderful wine at Top Shelf Gourmet in Sister Bay or at Main Street Market in Egg Harbor. Go hiking, sailing and more. Rent jet skis and pontoon boats at Snug Harbor Inn in Sturgeon Bay. Take a fishing charter out of Baileys Harbor, or just sit and relax and enjoy the peace. And sometimes in the summer, the Northern Lights are just plain awesome.
