Where To Now?
In the last few years the travel industry has sustained some major setbacks. Terrorist attacks in New York, London, Madrid and more recently Bali has made international travel seem less appealing in the eyes of many Australian holiday makers. In addition the sky rocketing fuel prices has made international travel less affordable as well.
However some parts of the industry have found positives out of the situation. They are part of the domestic industry which relies heavily on domestic visitors. These businesses have seen some growth because of the tendency of holiday makers to look closer to home for their travel plans.
Nestled on the coast, a 3 hour drive from both Sydney and Canberra is one such destination. Ulladulla is a small town surrounded by stunning natural beauty with a population of around 15,000. During the summer months however Ulladulla is known to expand to about 65,000 residents. The town recently has expanded further because of the increased demand from holiday makers in Sydney and Canberra.
In fact the whole south coast has
experienced similar growths. Destinations like Jervis Bay, Batesman Bay and the far south coast have experienced similar growths. It seems as though the urban crowd have decided that the close and affordable holiday destinations have made an excellent alternative for international travel and local businesses are loving it.
Melissa Driver who owns a small cafe in Ulladulla says that she "hasn't seen the town so busy in my life for this time of year". Her shop Sweets at the Park is recording improved sales on last year's efforts and she is sure that this trend is sure to continue in the coming summer.
With beaches and national park as good as you can get anywhere in the world and plenty of activities and attractions Ulladulla and the south coast are sure to have another record season this year.
