Good Leaders Don't Know-It-All Or Do-It All!
The leader of a successful company is like a President, rather than a dictator. He/She must have a Cabinet of good advisers. Every thriving firm that wishes to last must be a one-person business. But the one person must have a trusted staff of Helpers, Advisors and/or Managers.
The person who tries to do it all alone will probably die trying with their business soon following. Nobody is so wise that they cannot learn or be too strong to need help.
Quick Look in the Mirror: Are you the Mr. (Ms or Mrs.) Know-It-All who thinks that if you want a job done right, you have to do it yourself? If so, no better time than the present to start changing that false mirror image that you are using to so cleverly fool yourself.
A successful leader must create a Staff. Just as Captain Kirk, had Spock, McCoy and the rest, so does a good business owner need his or her counselors and advisers. Every General has their Colonels. Every Colonel has their Captains and so on. No officer is left completely on their own. This is one of the few wise rules of war. Every employer should have his or her own support group of competent helpers.
Too many business men/women make the mistake of doing everything themselves and try to follow every job through on their own. The take false pride in being indispensable. Some will even say to themselves, "If I'm gone for even one day something will surely go wrong". This is the type of self-serving self-praise that describes
a bad staff organizer.
Your skill as a great organizer is tested by the amount of time your business runs smoothly in your absence. If you cannot leave it for more than a week, you need to re-analyze your staff, their respective responsibilities and capabilities, as well as the direction of your leadership.
In every company large or small their should be a nucleus of competent individuals who have been properly trained and can be trusted to carry out the duties of their peers as well as yourself in your absence. This nucleus is your Staff. These are the people that will make the difference between success and failure.
Train, Trust and Utilize Your Staff to their fullest potential!
One Last Thought In Closing:
One cannot build a good staff without good leadership. One comparison of good leadership that comes to mind is the Old Scottish Clan. The members of a Clan were true to their Chief and he was true to them. If even the humblest member of the Clan was injured or killed, the Chief stepped in to avenge or rescue them. The Chief fought for his people. He held his own life in lesser value than that of the welfare of his Clan. This example is of course in extreme, but the moral of the story is, "you must fight for your people to have them fight for you".
