Web Site Optimization
Web Site Optimization
Web site optimization can refer to many different things. it can
refer to images, cascading style sheets, html, layout, meta tags
and, of course, search engine optimization.
I will explain some basics of Search Engine Optimization.
So you have built your site. you added all those neat little
graphics, animations etc. Your site looks AWESOME!... BUT, still
your are not getting any hits!!!???
Let me start by saying: It doesnt MATTER how good your site
looks!!! (well, it kidda does...but not to a search engine)
If you want people to visit your site, there are many things you
must do.
#1. You must get listed in search engines.
this is not very difficult to do. most sites will get listed
within 1-2 weeks. the hard thing is to get listed in the TOP
positions of a search engine's result. to get listed, you simply
need to submit to major search engines, such as GOOGLE, YAHOO,
MSN. you have to make sure you target correct keywords in your
page. if your page sells luggage, for example, you should
concentrate on not only a product page, but also articles ABOUT
luggage. search engines love TEXT articles. they will pick up in
these articles words related to 'luggage'. these may be words
that your potential clients will use when searching for your
site or similar sites. by having lots of contect including these
keywords, you increase your chances of being in the top results.
#2. You must have people linking to your site.
this one may be harder than the one
above. i have always been
against having to pay for links, but this is also an option that
is available to you. if you have some money to invest, you may
what to do a search on PPC (pay per click). this is a system
used by some search engines that will list you pages and charge
you for each click you get. i will show you better ways of
attracting click without spending this money.
if you know other webmasters, you may want to ask them to add a
link to your site from their site. they may also request the
same from you. this is refered to as 'reciprical link'.
Search engines see a link pointing to your page as a vote from
that page to you. they also look at the quality of that link. if
a popular page links to you, it will be a stronger vote than one
from a page not so popular. example: Page A links to page B. -
page B has received a vote from page A.
i will get deeper into this article in some time.... for more
