Strontium: Successful Ostoporosis and Osteopenia Treatment

Loss of bone density in Osteopenia and Osteoporosis are the cause of debilitating fractures in older women and men.

There has been much excitement in the health care community about a new Osteoporosis drug, Protelos, (Strontium Ranelate) approved by the European Union in Fall 2004.

The FDA has not yet approved the drug for use in the United States.
It is still in the clinical trials stage.

But those who incorporating natural and complementary medicine in their practices have advocated natural forms of strontium as Osteoporosis and Osteopenia treatments for some time.
Both Jonathan V. Wright M.D. and Robert Jay Rowen M.D. have written on the subject. Here is a summary from their work.

As early as 1910 a German researcher reported that strontium seemed to be very effective in stimulating the rapid formation of bone and in 1920 another German researcher concluded that strontium and calcium were superior to calcium alone in mineralizing bone.

A 1952 report from Cornell University reinforced the 1920 conclusions. It stated that calcium and strontium work better together than calcium alone for rebuilding bone.

In 1959, Mayo Clinic physicians reported the use of strontium as an Osteoporosis treatment. 22 individuals with severe,
painful osteoporosis took 1,700 milligrams of strontium daily and another 10 took the same amount of strontium along with estrogen and testosterone.

The results

were:
All patients showed improvement.
18 of the 22 in the strontium-only group had 'marked improvement' while the other 4 had moderate improvement. In the hormones plus strontium group, nine of 10 experienced 'marked improvement' of
their symptoms, and the other one had moderate improvement. This
study used strontium lactate.

In 1981 there was a study of patients with cancer that had metasticized to bone. The results were improved bone density and lessened pain in cancer-affected areas. I believe that
this study used strontium lactate also.

In 1985, there was a 6 month study of strontium carbonate supplements. There were six particpants and each was given 500-700 mg per day of strontium carbonate.

Bone biopsies were done before and after treatment and researchers reported that bone formation had improved while bone resporption (removal of bone had remained the same).
