Who Are You Going to Call?

Let me ask you a question ... if you had a pain in your side,

would you let your neighbour whip out your appendix?

Of course you wouldn’t and it wouldn’t matter how many

episodes of E.R. he’d seen!

You’d go to a doctor - an expert in his field. It makes you

wonder why so many people approach friends, relatives and

colleagues for advice about specialist problems, when these

people have no more qualifications than our telly-watching

friend.

Every hour of every day there are problems and questions

you need answered, whatever you’re doing and whatever

your own experience and qualifications.

Here’s a little quiz for you - see if your answers match those

of the experts.

Do you know the best way to keep tax records of your

car expenses?

According to Sandy Botkin, Attorney and Certified Public

Accountant, Chief Executive Officer and Principal Lecturer

of the Tax Reduction Institute based in the Washington, DC

area, there are five methods you can use to keep records

that have varying degrees of success in trying to bullet-proof

your car from the tax man:

1. you keep track of your mileage daily from stop to

stop, recording whether it is business or personal

2. the Ninety Day Log: here you would do exactly as you

did under method one but for only ninety consecutive days

3. the One Week A Month Method

4. only keep track of personal and commuting mileage - the

difference is business

5. the desperation approach.

What common vegetable can help you lose weight,

keep your blood sugar levels stable, cure dysentery,

prevent colon and prostate cancer and lower bad

cholesterol?

James F Balch, MD, graduate of the School of Medicine at

Indiana University, explains the benefits of garlic, "Garlic

contains germanium and selenium, which are

sulfur-containing antioxidants that boost the immune system.

In a study, conducted by Dr. Tariq Abdullah, Kyolic (garlic)

killed 20 percent more of the tumor cells in laboratory

cultures than did raw garlic. And raw garlic is by itself one of

the most potent boosters of your natural killer cells."

And you thought it was only good with prawns!

Why aren’t you as successful as you should be?

Gary Ryan Blair, The GoalsGuy, is one of the top strategic

thinkers in the world and founder of GoalsGuy Learning

Systems. He offers an explanation:

"You commit career malpractice every time you do things in a

mediocre manner, every time you show up late, every time

you are unprepared. There is no inherent value in mediocrity,

no reason for people to stop and pay attention, nothing

worth bragging about. You will never hear anyone say,

"Hey, look at me! I'm mediocre and proud of it!"

"Being "world-class" has nothing to do with size, education,

or bloodline; it has everything to do with decision,

commitment, action, and persistence. Excellence is a

destination for anyone who appreciates, respects, and

demonstrates hard work and good judgment!"

How is business going to change this century?

Our final expert offers some words of advice to everyone

who is involved in business:

"Business is going to change more in the next ten years than it

has in the last fifty.

"If the 1980s were about quality and the 1990s were about

reengineering, then the 2000s will be about velocity. About

how quickly the nature of business will change. About how

quickly business itself will be transacted. About how

information access will alter the lifestyle of consumers and

their expectations of business. Quality improvements and

business process improvements will occur far faster. When

the increase in velocity of business is great enough, the very

nature of business changes. A manufacturer or retailer that

responds to changes in sales in hours instead of weeks is no

longer at heart a product company, but a service company

that has a product offering.

"Very few companies are using digital technology for new

processes that radically improve how they function, that give

them the full benefit of all their employees' capabilities, and

that give them the speed of response they will need to

compete in the emerging high-speed business world."

These words were written by Bill Gates, chairman and chief

executive officer of Microsoft Corporation and arguably one

of the most successful businessmen of the century.

If you need advice about business, who are you going to call

your next door neighbour... or Bill Gates?

Don’t leave the important answers to the amateurs - always

ask an expert.
